‘Backgrounds’ Group Exhibition

BACKGROUNDS

CURATED BY IVY MEI

OPENING: FRIDAY, 11 NOVEMBER 2011, 6 – 9PM

ARC Gallery is please to present BACKGROUND, a group exhibition by Ivy Mei, Syreeta King, Laura Williams and Bunney.

This show is self-organised and related to a theme of backgrounds; It is a narrative focus group show, and the curator has chosen to work with artists who consider themselves stimulated by ‘feminist methodology’, as identified in the artistic process demonstrated by both feminist theory and practice.

Ivy’s prints connect symbolism, colours, and references to sub-cultures. She works closely to a particular obsession which signifies personal experiences, in which she attempts to search out unpredictable impacts.

Syreeta gives a dominating performance which represents various derivations including feminist issues and the power of invention through subject, colour and space. Her photographic pieces reflect her cultural heritage and life experiences.

Laura’s works are based on photography which represents her family background; the sense of emptiness that shows in her work relates to her grandmother’s past life. The photos could be viewed by means of reproductions exhibited as an influential documentary work that embraces feminism in a realistic way.

Bunney’s work is inspired by Mother Nature. He has created simple figure forms, with elements of the surrounding environment. The sculptures represent purity and surrealism at the same time. Bunney sources raw, recycled materials as his main medium.
